A Grammarsaurus Approach to Writing

This is a progressive approach which builds up knowledge year on year and incorporates the grammar that is part of the national curriculum in appropriate text types so children can see that it is used for a specific purpose. 

The writing process for each genre of text will take between 2-3 weeks and will start off with children, where appropriate, doing a ‘cold write’ (totally independent without teacher input). Teachers will use this cold write to then prioritise elements of writing that need to be revised, introduced or modelled. Each unit comes with a large checklist which incorporates specific language features, organisation, grammar elements and punctuation. An exemplar text or texts will then be scrutinised, elements identified. Children will discuss purpose and audience and appropriate language features. Ideas will be modelled either verbally or written and this will feed into a final piece of writing. Each year builds on previous knowledge.
