At Errington we wish to instil in the children a passion for reading by providing them with access to quality classic and contemporary texts covering a range of genres.  Reading should be at the heart of the whole curriculum and every opportunity to use quality books as a stimulating starting point and throughout the learning process will be explored.

From Year 2 onwards the children follow the Accelerated Reader programme. Children are assessed using the Star Reader test and given a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The ZPD is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation. Children choose their own books from within their ZPD. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. Children will read their Accelerated Reader books for 20 minutes at school each day. They will also bring their book home each night to read. Once a book has been read, the children complete a quiz about the book online.

Children also have access to Reading Plus for 20-30 minutes 4-5 times a week. This is an individualised computer based reading application. This can be used at home following the link below. At least once a week, your child will read in a guided reading group with their teacher. The teacher will choose a range of high quality texts, including novels, non-fiction, poetry etc.
